Iconic Elizabethan House which has been a Jesuit school for more than 200 hundred years.

This iconic Elizabethan House, once the home of the Shireburn family, has been an internationally renowned Jesuit school for more than 200 hundred years. Whether you take a guided tour of the house, walk in the grounds or attend one of the many special public events put on during the year you won't be disappointed.

During a tour of Stonyhurst, visitors will see how present day pupils live, work and play; have the opportunity to see the chapels and historic rooms including the Great Hall with portraits of the seven former pupils awarded the Victoria Cross and the table on which Cromwell is reputed to have slept the night before the Battle of Preston in 1648.

The Gardens, Grade II* listed, which include a large ornamental pond, are also open to the public and enjoy scenic views over the Ribble Valley countryside. There is a tea and gift shop located in the main building which can also be accessed from the gardens.

Ribchester Roman Museum

Roman Ribchester

This ancient riverside village is built on the site of the Roman fort of Bremetennacum. Estimated to have covered six acres of ground, a large portion of the remains lie under the old church and churchyard.

The Roman Museum has recently been extended, and provides interesting displays about Roman life in the area. Many artifacts from this time are on show, including copies of a highly detailed Roman Helmet found in Ribchester by a small boy in 1797. The original is now in the British Museum.

It's one of the district's most popular villages with local shops and amenities, an art gallery and some award winning accommodation and cosy country pubs.
